Hi , Sue Mc here. I do the press reports each week for the club. Just wanted to say thanks to all who send in their weekly match reports. Jo Pope has just commented that the E & E seem to be putting lots of our reports in at the moment. Not certain why but I am happy they are. I actually send a summary of all results/games in every Monday morning following league or cup matches at the weekend and sometimes they put things in and sometimes they don't. I send the same email to E and E , Exmouth Journal, Western Morning News and southwestsports(the internet site). So thanks Jo for your positive comments and keep up the good work all our buddin' match report writers - Maybe we should have an award at the end of the year for the most entertaining contribution ????? What do you think ? x Sue

Hello there! Just to say the 1st XI men won 3-1 against a very attacking Exeter Uni side. Most of the goals were scored on the break and we soaked up their pressure well in what was a tightly contested game mainly played in the middle 50 of the pitch.

Goals from Sam Wier, Matt Corr(?) and Will Shutt?

Also, just to say that despite losing last week, and there being no match report... I scored last week ! ! Incase anyone hasnt heard about it - I personally think it deserves goal of the season! But a very very extremely harsh green card [ thanks Deb :-) ] put my game to rest...

Anyway, hope everyone is well after a very cold weekend of hockey... see you soon,

Simon GOOD WIN SIMON, GOOD LUCK FOR THIS WEEKEND (SUE MC)

With Exe feeling confident after two consecutive wins, the final result against Firebrands was a bitter pill to swallow.
With captain Jo Pope ordering a goal within the first 20 minutes, Exe started strong but couldn’t find that final ball to penetrate the attacking quarter. Firebrands on the other hand found their way into Exe’s circle on 15 minutes, following an attacking move down the right, eventually resulting in a lifted shot into the left side of the goal.
The game certainly became more physical, with players fighting hard for the ball. Helen Johnson and Jane Cann worked particularly hard in the middle, and along with Harriet Payne, they thwarted a number of attacks. However, Firebrands found their way through eventually when a cross from the left found a player, who slotted the ball home.
Exe were determined not to give up ‘their fortress’ easily and the breakthrough came after Sarah Payne hit a fantastic ball from the defending quarter, which put Pope clear past the Firebrands defenders. Pope drove into the circle and rounded the keeper before showing fine composure to place the ball into the goal from an increasingly narrowing angle.
This goal gave Exe momentum and an equaliser looked likely, but an unfortunate bloody injury suffered by the goal scorer was a blow to the home team. Half time came with the score at 1-2.
Both teams started the second half with intent, with both goalkeepers called into action on several occasions, with Lucy Dawkins making some crucial saves. Exe wanted to find the equaliser, knowing that Firebrands were rattled going into half time, but it was Firebrands who increased their lead after a tackle outside the circle was deemed worthy of short corner, which Firebrands struck hard into the goal.
Despite relentless running from the whole team, Exe were unable to find the goals they needed, and the game finished a frustrating 1-3.
With new coaches, Sue Wills and Tam Pascoe at the helm, there will be several things to work on at training, but Exe need to remember to take away the positives from this weekend’s game.

News on the men is that we lost... we were at deadlock at 0-0 and then 1-1 for most of the time when a last minute goal by the Hornets gave them a 2-1 victory. They had two players yellow carded for persistent aggression and professional fouls which should illustrate the type of match it was... and yes I did put in an extra dramatic roll for the benefit of the umpire... it got the guy sent off though and he deserved it! OUCH! SOUNDS NASTY SIMON, HOPE ALL OUR TEAM ARE FIT AND IN ONE PIECE! WELL DONE FOR SHOWING RESTRAINT LADS, ITS VERY EASY TO PLAY THAT WAY TOO. Mitch, I was just about to do the match report - honest!
Just like to add Tom Tom is firmly back in the box now as I don't think it can cope with the Sedgemoor league. We were still there on time though - but probably only because Roger (co-pilot) said turn right at the point when it was sending us down a road which said unsuitable for heavy vehicles. I hope everyone's injuries recover in time for our next match... Jane.. Rosie...KP... Gemma...cos we're shaping up to be a fab team. See you all on Wednesday!!

I also forgot to mention that I will be unable to attend training this week due to a rather unfortunate incident involving, an U14 netball tournament, the curb of a pavement (inconveniently positioned!!), the placement of my sunglasses on my head and now a very swollen black and blue left ankle with severly strained tendons!! Well my hockey chums, I am afraid I write with rather unsatisfying and upsetting news. Having trained to the max, performed at the auditions and sold myself in the interview, I tightly clutched my telecommunications device in my wee (!) hand all day on Monday and Tuesday to the receive the rather sad email of rejection on Wednesday lunchtime. Unfortunately after 10,000 applicants I reached the final 200 to be told my gladiator journey was over (till next time!!). Upon reflection and discussion with two of my fellow contendees, we decided that in fact we were too fit (we all scored 65 or 70/70 on the fitness testing!!) or too nice (we were naturally the innocent giggly girls). We decided they were looking for the more rough around the edges, fiery sort of contestant as we later discovered the cage fighter and the Jujitsu girls got through to the final 40!! So I shall be departing the hockey scene for now and focussing my efforts on bare knuckle fighting in preparation for next year! Store your foam fingers safely people, this gladiator is not going down without a fight!!

Hi. Message for 3rds and 4ths re Teas on 25 October. Have just heard from ISCA Centre that they CAN'T accomodate us on that day (they are full of apologies - apparently 200 people there at a wedding) so we have to make alternative arrangements. Can I leave it with Captains to organise something for that day please. I'll confirm at next week's committee meeting.
Also can I please be advised asap who is collecting match fees (and their e-mail addresses) for the 2nds, 3rds and 4ths?
Many thanks

Hi all...can I remind those of you who have not completed a membership form and made a payment that some form of payment is supposed to be with me by tomorrow. So far I have received around 50 payments/standing order set up's, based on last years playing and associate members that is less than half of the membership. I will be chasing from now on, so please ensure that you bring payment to training this week. Can I remind you again that some membership forms went out with the wrong address on, it is 16 School Road Exeter EX2 9AF.
Captains, please bring player lists to the next committee meeting. Ladies I can review the league forms, gentleman I understand you keep a list of players for each game.
Can someone also let me know who all of the elected captains are so that I may contact them direct.

Thanks Deb OKAY ALL, DEB HILL IS ON THE CASE SO GET YOUR MONEY OUT........ (SUE MC- Word of advice ....speak to her before she speaks to you, she is there to help)

Hello all... well it appears that our resident sick-note - Sam "I have glandular fever" Weir - hasnt managed to concisely sum up our game having watched and supported from the sidelines...

I'd like to say we convincingly put a strong Sidmouth 1st team to bed with a 3-0 victory. Our games against them are often physical and more often than not we end up on the losing side, this time however we were fast and flowing especially up the wings with a well thought out formation that will hopefully see us through the season. Well done Max for coming up with it and well done to the rest of the team for putting it in to practice...

See you tuesday,

Simon

Exe Men 1st played brilliantly to beat Sidmouth 3-0, with only 11 men and no subs, the team worked well creating opportunities for each other, despite the banter between the two teams and the umpires at the start of the match. A great game of hockey and a brilliant start to the season! THANKS SAM , SIMONS CHIPPED IN TOO , SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT START (X SUE MC )

The Exe Mens 2nds fought valiantly with only ten men against Isca D but eventually lost 2-0. Both goals were against the run of play we felt and the score was defin
itely not a fair reflection!
Still though, pride in defeat for our efforts!

Then i went on holiday for a couple weeks, and have been working like a mad women!
Anyway, i don't yet know exactly what im doing this year, but i will likely be in England for a bit yet, with my uni application in limbo at the moment.
If its ok, i'd love to train still on Tuesday nights, mainly to keep fit and in contact. and will prob be up for saturday stuff if and when needed! please keep nagging me as well because i am prone to forget and to laziness!

Hey all, dont you just hate this time of year when you just know you have to start some 'light' preseason training about now.... The sound of my asthmatic lungs puffing and wheezing, and my poor legs that complain at the request of dragging my sorry behind around the roads of Exeter - is it just me??? Just a quick note so thank you to all the ladies who came down to spend the weekend on the farm. Robyn kept me on my toes and the neighbours awake from over using the tractor horn. But Richard (or Edna?) woke Robyn at the crack of dawn and then everyone was awake. Hefty the waiter on saturday night was so excited so see you he riped the gusset out of his trousers, and he does not do that for everyone!
The cows were furious that your tents had flattened some grass in their favourite field. Freddie is still missing all the attention he had over the weekend. Aunt Sally thought you were all lovely girls. Granny hopes your cushions are useful. Jane says thank you for a great weekend. And I say, who is Edna anyway? Is she a Morman? Proper Job

Oh Blunty Blunty Blunty, you are confused, upon consultation with my diary I see that 17th Jan is in fact a Saturday!! Can you please confirm that your January radar is registering the above information!! I feel such an outing would be a beneficial experience for the teams, if you were to venture to Sherborne then we would be honoured to host such a prestigious club!

Blunty Blunty Blunty!! I am enquiring on behalf of my school hockey teams, wondering whether it would be possible to make friendly fixtures against the mighty Exe on 17th Jan, I am thinking, Exe 2's and Exe 3's? What do you think or who do I contact?

Hi Susie - can we get something on the front page of the website asking players not to enter the pitch gates when there is something else taking place before our slots with summer league up at St Lukes - we need to get this message to the other teams too so will have a word with Jill. I don't think it was our ladies but someone on the pitch beforehand had mentioned to Bev their 'concerns' about people entering the pitch and then going onto the pitch running/knocking up before the hockey slot, and we need to support her in dealing with this. Cheers Treez
"HI TREEZ...OH BOY! SOME PEOPLE ARE SOOO KEEN TO GET THEIR EXTRA MINS OF HOCKEY AREN`T THEY?! IT CERTAINLY ISN`T THE TEAM I`M IN....AS YOU SAW....BLOOMIN` LUCKY IF THEY ALL GET TO THE PITCH BY THE START TIME..TUT!!! NO DOUBT THE GIRLS WILL HELP SPREAD THE WORD THO, SO THANKS TREEZ." Blunty

Hi Blunty, the First and Last played their first but not their last summer league match up at the Uni last thursday and put in a convincing victory over Sidmouth. Can't remember if it was 2 or 3 nil, but we won anyway, even after having our numbers decreased with a yellow card. And no it wasn't me.
Exe representatives were: Payno, Kirsty, Jonesy, Tam and Me. Possibly Lucy(?) but not sure if she's with us or not...
Bring on the rest of summer evenings...
"CHEERS SI FOR THE UPDATE, HOPEFULLY NOT YOUR LAST! GREAT START BY THE FIRST & LAST...HOPE TO POP UP TO GET SOME PICS SOON...AND TO CHECK WHO IS GETTING CARDS AT `FRIENDLY` SUMMER LEAGUE! ALSO CHECK IF LUCY IS THE JORDAN, IN WHICH CASE, VERY MUCH ONE OF US!!!" Blunty

This really is the last call for those surplus mobile phones! I will be at the Cup Final on Saturday (1.30pm at Exeter University v Isca Dragons) to collect the last offerings - we can get up to £4 per phone irrespective of it's condition. Just take out the SIM card and hand the phone over - if you have any mobile phone accessories they are accepted as well. Email me if you have phones but won't be at the Cup Final and we can make other arrangements. Thanks to those who have already supported the cause - and don't forget to check out the easyfundraising website as well. These are my last tasks before standing down as Fundraising Secretary. COME ON EVERBODY , MAKE A SMALL EFFORT AND GET THOSE OLD MOBILES OUT AND OFF TO MITCH TO RAISE TH CLUB SOME MONEY - CHEERS

ALSO GOOD LUCK TO THE 1STS WHO PLAY ISCA IN THE FINAL OF LADIES DEVON CUP AT EXETER UNIVERSITY ON SAT STARTING AT 1.30 PM

Please can someone tell me when, where and at what time the Cup Final is - the press said on the 25th but can't think that's right as most people work on Fridays !!
How did the Vets get on we did think about them but were in London for the Marathon, no , not running, watching !! Saw Hannah D. at about the half way stage on Tower Bridge , but she didn't see us , was looking good , so guess she finished in a great time.
My youngest son Francis did it in just over 5 hours but it's his first attempt and he did it for British Heart Foundation in memory of his Dad.

Whilst we are in back patting mode, I`d like to add a list of thanks myself, in no particular order of priority:
- the amazing 2nd XI Capt. Zipps, who has the patience, diplomacy, vision and energy to unify the world...!
- the EXE News Hounds..thanks so much for your regular sunday and monday efforts to get the Exe weekend results here on the web...no matter how painful that was for you! Magic and Grange for the 1sts, Jester (occasionally Wazza) for the 2s, Rosie, George and occasionally Kath for the 3s, Mitch for the 4ths and Jill or Jane for the 5ths...Jeffs, Jack and Max for the Men...BIG THANKS ALL OF YOU FOR A BRILLIANT RELIABLE STREAM OF INFO WHICH HAS HELPED UNIFY US ALL! xx
- Glady (and your side kick Payno) for stepping into the Social void and setting up the super Christmas bash and the unmissable end of season knees up! You are a star and I really hope you are going to do a 2nd term of office? Think of the fun and frolics you could put in place if you had time for planning!!
- Shutey and Jude...I have spent nearly every Tuesday night from Sept to April with you both, from 6pm-7pm, and our juniors have certainly enjoyed the `Hockey Buzz!` we have created...our roll just kept on growing! Enjoy your hockey free Tuesdays to the full...you both really deserve a break!
GREAT 1ST SEASON...RECHARGE WHILE YOU CAN !

AND IF YOU HAVEN`T YET GIVEN ENOUGH OF YOURSELF...THEN WHY NOT `VOLUNTEER` NOW...THERE ARE PLENTY OF `OPPORTUNITIES` FOR THE 2008-9 SEASON!?

Thanks Mitch for writing the match report and putting my name up in lights! Can't believe it took me all season to find the goal (or maybe I can believe it!).

Just wanted to give a three-cheers to Mitch for her dedicated captaincy work all season - the 4's started without a captain and still haven't voted anyone in for the 2007/2008 season! Mitch stepped in to sort us all out, made sure we had people on the pitch each week, made sure the 4's were represented at committee meetings and generally put us all together - no-one else was brave enough to get their hands out of their pockets and step forward, so thanks Mitch - a job well done.
"HEY STILO, LONG TIME NO HEAR. THANKS FOR ADDING THESE VALUABLE WORDS, WHICH ARE ECHOED BY ALL THOSE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE PLAYED 4THS THIS SEASON, NO DOUBT. " Blunty

Exe Ladies 2s travelled away to Cheltenham, keen to finish the season with a win and keen to keep their good league position in the table. Exe left it late against this team on the home leg, only securing game in the dying minutes, but the ladies in red were confident that more goals could be scored this time, making it a comfortable win.

It was a slightly rushed warm up, with cars getting lost and players refusing to wear the correct kit (one guess!), but Exe started the game with gusto, with Anne Freeman setting Emma Warren up in front of goal after just one minute. However, Warren's surprise at the pass when expecting Anne's shot, meant the keeper was able to react and push the shot wide.

Exe found they had the space to play the ball around the park, but this proved to be their undoing at times when a period of fifteen minutes saw Exe pass the ball more times to Cheltenham than their own team! It was no real surprise that it was the home side scored first following a series of short corners, which they put away at the near post.

Exe's best response to this was to score a goal, so from the re-start Exe drove forwards to win a short corner of their own, which Julie Simpson put away on the rebound. Short corners have been a strength for Exe this season, so Cheltenham notably worked hard to avoid these opportunities from happening.

Exe went into half time feeling like they had had a rather mixed first half: great in places, awful in others. The team talk focused on maintaining the excellent composure on the ball shown from Emma Pike, Julie Simpson and Vikki Ritchie up the middle of the pitch, and to avoid the 'silly moments' the 2s have come to expect in the middle period of the game.

The second half saw Exe having the majority of the attacks with Kate Drysdale becoming more involved in the game, and cutting in from the left midfield to supply Emma Warren and Robyn Walton with the balls for attacks. With Alice Littlejohn working tirelessly on the right wing, Exe felt it was only a matter of time, but Cheltenham defence showed quality in their tackles and distribution.

Much of the second half continued in a similar way, but as the match came nearer to a close, both teams were starting to become more vocal and more frustrated. It was a short corner that proved to be the difference between the two teams, with Kelly Luscombe slotting the ball home at the post. Her first goal of the season (and she couldn't have scored it at a better time).

Exe once again left it late in the game, but 3 points were won and upon news of other results, 3rd place was secured.

Good luck next season, ladies!

Exe 2s would like to thank everyone who has supported them this season.

sue mc here - EXCELLENT YEAR WELL DONE TO ALL WHO PLAYED IN THE SQUAD GREAT LEAGUE POSITION .APPLAUSE TO CAPT ANNE AND BLUNTY WHO HAD THE STRESS OF MANAGEMENT FOR THE TEAM

Firstly thanks to Glady and Payno for the excellent Dinner and Disco, I had a great night.

Secondly I was really chuffed to receive the 2nd team players player award, it means alot when voted for by the guys you've played with all year.

Thirdly, well done to Anne for splendid captaincy this year, ably supported by Blunty, we've had a great season, a fantastic cup run and excellent league position.

And finally as Umpiring Secretary I would like to thank all those club umpires and player/umpires who have turned out every week to ensure the league games are actually able to be played! I won't name you all but I really appreciate all of your support over the year. For any lady umpires I attach details of a mentoring day, if you are interested. Thanks again you've all been brilliant.

**All Ladies Club Umpires of any standard.**
The Ladies County Championship Finals will be held at Exeter University on 31st May/1st June. DCHUA will be offering group mentoring sessions at several of the games to ladies umpires of all standards. If you are interested in either mentoring or being mentored please email dchua.appointments@googlemail.com. This will be a good chance to meet other club umpires and get possibly the right answer(?) to those odd things you would like to know about umpiring.

just been reading through the results and thought id leave a comment to try and lighten the mood! mens 1s play some of the best hockey of their season to beat Taunton Civil Service 2nds and secure safety. although we were rained on for the full 70minutes the support was good. the 2nds returned from yeovil to watch the game for a bit and the ever loyal brittny and lucy kept the dugout warm! Jenny and digger arnold, my parents and titch's mum also braved the weather!! 3 goals from titch, 1 from rich (hit by max directly into his stick :-) and into the goal) 1 for simon (celebrated in fantastic style) and 1 from me. ALSO, i was delighted and surpried as i was handed a bin liner containing all the kit that i had left in taunton when we played the away fixture! i'd forgotten how much i loved this hoodie! anyway thats the end of this essay of a comment. see everyone on the 5th!!!!! x

Sorry to hear about another horrible facial injury, Nat and hope that you are not in too much pain. I didn't eat too much soup, but got a bit hooked on mashed potato and custard, not necessarily mixed together! Happy mashing!

In recognition of the splendid efforts in the rain at the weekend there will be NO senior ladies training this week - Tuesday or Wednesday. However, normal service will be resumed on 25th & 26th March. Guys - if your training has finished at Exmouth do you want to join us at Lukes next Wednesday 7-8.30pm?

Hi all I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has wished me well. Big thanks to my entourage at the hospital!!! I felt like a super star! Also thanks to Sue and Jo for there support on the pitch, I am so glad you never told me my tooth was in my gum shield!!! Thankfully all 4 of my front teeth have now been pushed back in and secured tight by my brace and the orthodontist so they won’t drop out! Fingers crossed I can keep them… I just can’t believe that the girl who loves food has been restricted to a diet of soup!!! The most drastic attempt to loose weight yet!
" OH NO! IT ALL SOUNDS FAIRLY HORRIBLE. PERHAPS YOU SHOULD COMPARE `SOUP` EATING PLANS WITH MAGIC OF THE 1STS? I AM GLAD YOU SEE THE ENFORCED DIET AS A POSSIBLE PLUS! KEEP YOUR CHIN UP, NAT x" Blunty

Exeter 5th v Isca 4TH

A huge thanks to Jill Dupain for performing miracles and finding 11 players at the 11th hour.

It has to be said that whilst everyone gave 100% a special mention to Ellie Keast for her gutsy attack and determination. The young players are certainly raising their level at every game.

A determined team put up a fantastic effort and a free hit back in defence put the 5ths into the lead by one of many good runs from Emma Haughton Brown.

A somewhat shell shocked Isca fought back and had a series of penalty corners which were defended well. Jane Bailey denied Isca by clearing a well struck hit on the line while covering the far post.

A lapse in concentration however, enabled Isca’s scrabbled attack to level the score.

We fought back to take the lead, and a very good scoop which was high in the net was blatently plucked out by one of the Isca defence in a style not dissimilar to Maradonna’s “hand of God”! A unsuccessful penalty flick gave Isca a reprieve from Exeter taking the lead.

A special mention to Jo Williams, who, despite being an attacker did a brilliant job in defence alongside goalie, Sally Turner, and Hannah Dupain.

In the second half Isca made some changes and increased their frequency of attack and a strike from a penalty corner injured our Captain Natalie Hooton, who, thankfully was wearing a gum shield, but had to leave the field for a nasty mouth injury and was taken by ambulance to hospital requiring treatment. Any player in the team without a gum shield will certainly now be buying one. Our best wishes goes to Natalie for a full and speedy recovery. The score at this point was 1-1 but after nearly 20 minutes of injury stoppage time, our players had become very cold with the wet conditions. Isca, who, being near the top of the league, wanted to continue the game for potential promotion reasons. We decided however to concede the game. The Isca captain and players asked me to forward their good wishes to Nats.

In a typical spirit of the 5ths, a contingent went to A&E to give Jo, who accompanied Nats in the ambulance, some dry clothes, and give the Captain Nats (who was despite having 3 blankets on still shivering from being drenched) our best wishes and moral support.

Exe, is it really as bad as it sounds?? No one is relegated, the same leagues will be waiting for you next year... just focus on the fun to be had in a few weekends time.

Plus, I scored on Saturday, that must mean something is going right!

See you at Sandy Park.

Exe Ladies 5th v Isca 4ths. Match conceeded at 1-1 draw just after half time

Well you guessed, horrible wet weather and playing on the water based astro at the University produced a great challenge to the team. So with our water wings attached the 5ths took to the pitch to play local rivals Isca 4ths with our flippers at the ready.

Jill Dupain has to be commended for putting the team together despite losing a number of regular players. She must have been quite desperate because Sue 'The Camera' McGivern even turned out. On a very slow pitch both teams worked hard to gain control of the game. Despite the somewhat makeshift team Exe defended brilliantly and midway through the game Sue Mc fed a through ball into the Isca half for Emma to accelerate onto. Emma drove into the Isca D and placed the ball through the Isca's GK 's legs and scored.

This goal gave the Exe team confidence and shocked Isca somewhat. However they continued to attack the Exe D and managed to gain an equalizer.

Not daunted by this Exe mounted a number of attacks after the goal and just before half time a defelected shot which was heading goalwards was palmed out by an Isca defender. This produced a stroke for Exe. But we missed (it happens !) Isca were rocked and were pleased to hear the half time whistle.

Exe regrouped and were determined to keep Isca out having played quite well at both ends of the pitch.

The second half saw Isca mounting a series of attacks and gained 3-4 corners. At one of these corners about 10 minutes into the half our Nat got hit in the mouth by a raised ball.

Poor Nat, she was in the middle of orthdontic treatment and this happened. The ambulance was called and the game stopped until she was despatched to hospital. The teeth were replaced and fingers crossed they will take (yes one of them was put in a plastic bag then milk to keep it alive! Please note). Thanks to Isca players for their help with first aid etc.

So , at this stage Exe were down to 9 very cold players but Isca 4ths needed to play on since they were pushing for promotion and needed the points. Since we are a nice club and the lost points would not affect us the Exe 5th decided to conceed the game even though the score was still 1-1.(So we had a moral victory really).

GOOD LUCK FROM EVERYONE AT THE CLUB NAT - YOU WILL BE BEAUTIFUL ONCE MORE X X --------------SUE MC

One word sums up todays game against Isca: YUCK!

Exe were keen to avenge the defeat suffered on the away leg, but when Isca scored inside the first thirty seconds the outlook looked as bleak as the weather.

What an excellent game by the U18s today - a great come back and a fantastic result against, it has to be said, a really good Isca team - but, hey, not good enough!!! Was a pleasure to umpire - great stuff ladies! On another matter, namely the wearing of various head gear - please, Ms Granger, lose it - looking at you today reminded me of that distant game when Exeter 1sts played against Teignmouth in last seasons Cup, you looked just like I did that day and I know you really wouldn't want that, now would you??!!!
